Application for fellowship training at National Heart Centre (NHC) may be made individually or through the applicant’s sponsoring institution, using the National Heart Centre Fellowship Application Form. All applications must be supported by the applicant's institution.
Applications for fellowship training will be reviewed by the NHC Selection Committee. The applicant may express his/her preference for a field of training in the application, but the final decision lies with NHC, based on the applicant’s qualification and the availability of training positions.
Confirmation of acceptance must be given by the applicant within one month from the date a training position has been offered or within the period stipulated by NHC. If no response is received within that period, NHC reserves the right to assign the training position to another applicant.
Applicants may also apply for funded fellowship positions. Each fellowship is tenable for a period from three to twelve months depending on the type of fellowship programme. Upon completion of the fellowship training, fellows should return to their country and apply the skills learned.
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION English is the medium of instruction for all fellowship programmes. Fellows must be able to communicate in English.
MEDICAL REGISTRATION Overseas fellows will be required to apply for temporary medical registration with the Singapore Medical Council. The fellow will be responsible for the registration fee which is currently SGD 150. This fee is subject to change without prior notice.
TRAINING PASS AND ENTRY VISA A training visit pass is required for the duration of training. Fellows from certain countries may need a visa. Fees for the training visit pass and visa will be borne by the fellow.
MEDICAL MALPRACTICE INSURANCE COVERAGE Fellows who are expected to have direct clinical responsibility of patients are required to take up medical malpractice coverage with the Medical Protection Society. The fellow will be responsible for the subscription fee which is subject to change without prior notice.
PERSONAL MEDICAL INSURANCE COVERAGE Fellows must arrange for their own medical/hospitalisation insurance coverage during the training period.
MEDICAL INDEMNITY NHC will require the sponsoring institution/fellow to sign a letter of medical indemnity.
ACCOMMODATION NHC can assist in arranging for accommodation for fellows upon request. The cost accommodation will be borne by the fellow. The monthly rental fee may range from SGD 500 to SGD 1000.
INCIDENTAL EXPENSES Expenses such as those incurred for training materials, meals, laundry and transport will be borne by the fellow.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF FELLOWS The fellow will be expected to involve himself/herself in the daily routine of the department and must be available for emergencies at night and on weekends. For surgical specialties, active participation as a scrub assistant should be possible.
LEAVE All applications for medical leave or any leave of absence whilst on training must be approved by the Head of Department. Medical leave must be justified with a medical certificate.
CHANGE OF PLACEMENT If the fellow wishes to change his/her placement or leave prior to completion of the training programme, permission must be sought from the Head of Department and the Director of NHC.
SUPERVISION OF TRAINING The Head, Senior Consultants and/or Consultants of the department concerned will supervise the fellows.
LOG BOOKS Fellows will be required to maintain a log book for all aspects of work carried out. The log book should be submitted monthly to the Supervisor and six-monthly to the Head of Department.
TRAINING REPORT The fellow will be required to submit an evaluation report within the last month of the training programme.
The Head of Department and/or the training supervisor will also submit a confidential report on the fellow’s performance.
CERTIFICATION NHC will award a Certificate of Training to the fellow at the end of his/her training provided the fellow has completed at least six months’ training and met all training objectives satisfactorily.
