Fellowship Training in Echocardiography

OBJECTIVES
To provide the subspecialty echocardiographic fellow with the theoretical and practical aspects of echocardiography, including two-dimensional colour doppler and M-mode techniques, exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiography, as well as intraoperative and diagnostic transoesophageal examinations.

DURATION
12 months

CONTENT

  • Understand the theoretical aspects of echocardiographic technique.
  • Learn the practical aspects of the various echocardiographic examination techniques.
  • Master the interpretations, and clinical applications of all the various echocardiographic techniques offered.
  • Conduct two-dimensional, M-mode and colour-doppler examinations.
  • Assist in the performance of exercise stress echocardiography.
  • Understand and assist in pharmacological stress echocardiography, especially dobutamine stress echocardiography.
  • Assist in transoesophageal echocardiography in the echocardiographic laboratory, coronary care unit and intraoperative area.
  • Be responsible for data entry and records of the patients.
  • Participate in research projects involving these patients.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  • MMed, MRCP or its equivalent
  • Completed 2 years of general training in Cardiology
  • The fellow should preferably be competent in interpretation of basic two-dimensional, M-mode and colour-doppler images.
