NHC performed 104 isolated valve surgeries in year 2005. The mortality rate was only 1.92%, well below the STS benchmark of 6% for mitral valve repair and 3.4% for aortic valve repair.
Heart valve surgery involves valve repair or replacement with an artificial valve. Valve repair is preferred over replacement since the heart strength is better preserved and the freedom from anti-coagulation. Over 90% of degenerative mitral valves are repaired in NHC with minimal mortality and morbidity.
